HOW MUCH RAW FOOD SHOULD I FEED MY DOG?

A SIMPLE GUIDE FROM RAW TREAT PET FOOD

Feeding raw shouldn’t be complicated. At Raw Treat Pet Food, we like to keep things honest, clear, and easy to follow, because knowing how much to feed your dog is the first step to giving them a healthy raw diet.

Here’s a straightforward guide to help you get the portions right, whether you’ve got a growing pup or a fully grown working dog.

HOW MUCH SHOULD ADULT DOGS EAT?

A simple rule of thumb:

Feed 2–3% of your dog’s ideal adult bodyweight per day.

For example:

  • A 20kg dog will typically eat 400g-600g per day

  • A 30kg dog will usually need 600g-900g per day

Split it into one or two meals, whatever suits you and your dog best.

Every dog is different, so keep an eye on their weight and adjust as needed. If they’re looking a bit lean, increase the amount. If they’re getting a little round, reduce slightly. Raw feeding is flexible.

HOW MUCH SHOULD PUPPIES EAT?

Puppies grow quickly, so they need more food (proportionate to their size) than adult dogs. Here’s a simple age based guide to help you get it right:

8-12 weeks old

Feed 8-10% of their current bodyweight per day, split into 3-4 meals.
They’re tiny, busy, and burning energy fast.

3-6 months old

Feed 6-8% of their current bodyweight per day, split into 3 meals.
Growth is still rapid, so they need steady fuel.

6-12 months old

Feed 4-6% of their current bodyweight per day, usually in 2 meals.
Their growth rate slows, and portions gradually reduce.

12+ months (or up to 18 months for large breeds)

Begin transitioning towards the adult guideline of 2-3% of ideal bodyweight. Larger breeds often mature later and may stay on higher amounts for longer.

WHAT ABOUT WORKING DOGS?

Working dogs often need more fuel, especially those with high activity levels. You can feed:

Up to 4% of their bodyweight per day, adjusting based on workload, condition, and the time of year.

Our Raw Treat 80:10:10 minces and meaty chunks give them the energy they need without the unnecessary fillers.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU'RE FEEDING THE RIGHT AMOUNT?

Use your dog’s body condition as your guide. You should:

  • Feel the ribs without pressing hard

  • See a clear waistline

  • Notice an hourglass shape from above

If that changes, adjust the portions. Simple.

TOP TIPS FOR RAW FEEDING SUCCESS

  • Feed based on ideal bodyweight – not current weight if they’re under or overweight

  • Make changes gradually and monitor your dog’s condition

  • Offer fresh water at all times

  • Ensure meals are fully defrosted before serving

  • Be consistent with meal times

  • Introduce new proteins slowly

Getting the portions right is easy once you know what your dog needs. Whether you’re starting your first raw journey or fine-tuning what you already feed, sticking to these simple guidelines will help keep your dog in great condition.
